For many years, so-called floor heating systems have been very often used in single-family housing. Water heated, for example by a gas boiler or heat pump, circulates in tubes placed under the floor and, releasing heat in them, heats the room from below. Currently, however, an innovative alternative solution is available on the market that works on a similar principle, but is much more effective – these are so-called water capillary mats. In this article, we explain what they are and how they work. We also suggest what to pay attention to when installing them – we invite you to read!
Above-average heating efficiency and versatile application – these are the main advantages of this solution, which make it increasingly popular. Water capillary mat is a system of thin tubes characterized by a small internal diameter, in which the liquid moves. This process is slow, based on the phenomenon of capillary flow, which translates into an even distribution of temperature over the entire surface. This is one of the reasons why heating and cooling is so effective.
In terms of technical details of construction, the tubes are made of a special, high-temperature resistant plastic – in most cases it is polypropylene. Their internal diameter is around 3 mm and they create a dense network with gaps of only 10 mm. This construction means that 1 square meter of water capillary mat can contain tubes with a total length of up to 100 m.
The main reason is the extraordinary density of the network of tubes that make up each mat. This is a huge surface that gives off heat, which also heats up evenly, making capillary heating much more efficient than classic floor heating. At the same time, compared to it, it is effective even in the case of low-temperature heating systems. For this reason, it is perfect for buildings equipped with heat pump.
High heating efficiency also results from the fact that the capillary mat is placed just below the surface of, for example, floor tiles. This translates into much faster and better heat exchange with the environment while limiting its losses. As a result, usually only a dozen or so minutes after starting such heating in the room, its effect is clearly felt. In classic floor heating systems, it often takes even many hours.
Capillary mats are therefore a perfect complement to them, as they increase the heating surface. With their help – in combination with a heat pump with a cooling function – you can easily maintain a constant temperature throughout the year (heating in winter and cooling in summer) with its ideal distribution throughout the house.
High efficiency and energy saving of this type of heating is just one of its many advantages. It is also worth using due to:
When using such a heating system, you should first and foremost monitor the amount of energy it consumes on your own. Clear deviations from the norm are usually the result of various irregularities in the operation of the installation. If you notice them, call specialists who will take care of a comprehensive diagnosis and repair, if necessary – it is best to contact Qborg for this purpose!
In addition, maintenance of water capillary heating should include activities such as:
Before this process is even carried out, it is necessary to prepare for it properly. The key is to meticulously prepare the places where the capillary mats are to be located.
The installation itself consists of attaching the tube panels using special, adapted brackets or glue. An alternative is to install mats designed to measure for a specific room. In the next step, the capillary mats are covered with finishing material, such as a screed on the floor and plaster on the walls. The last stage is to connect the installation to the heating system and conduct tests of the heating efficiency, including the tightness of the system.
Although the process of installing water capillary mats seems simple, it requires a lot of experience, access to the right tools and precision. Remember that if you make mistakes when attaching the panels, removing them will require chiseling the floors, walls or ceilings, which generates high additional costs. For this reason, it is best to leave this task in the hands of specialists.
